My journey begins as a small girl from the rural areas — a disadvantage, but I had big dreams and always fought for what I wanted. During my school years, I was always competitive in all subjects, except for Mathematics. I had accepted that it was the one subject I’d never be good at. In 2017, I completed my Matric, and as expected, my Maths marks were very low. I had to say goodbye to my dream of becoming a Pharmacist and instead did a science bridging course at UKZN.

During my first year at university, I met a Maths lecturer named Dr. Tshibangu. He taught me that nothing is really impossible. I would consult with him every week. For the first time, I got an A in Maths — and a Golden Key! From that moment, I knew no height was too high to reach.

In my second year, I chose to study Computer Science. I had no idea what it was and had never seen code before in my life. I failed many modules and fell into depression. I struggled a lot with my mental health throughout my undergraduate years, but that little girl inside kept fighting. I went above and beyond to get help with my modules — I didn’t give up.

In my final year, I had no NSFAS funding. I had to get multiple jobs to support myself and my sister, who was a first-year student with no NSFAS either. I worked two tutoring jobs and one promoter job. I had to learn how to balance everything. I had no life — I had to give my all.

During that hard time, I was blessed with a school bursary, which motivated me even more. I passed all my first-semester modules with a Dean’s Commendation. Before finishing my degree, I got a job at FNB — one of the companies I had listed in my prayers. I was so happy to move to the big city and start my career.

Sometimes I still can’t believe that I work for such a huge company, with such a good working environment and a team that has accomplished so much. For me, it’s all about letting people know that anything is possible — even when you come from a disadvantaged background.

This is only the beginning. I have greater heights to climb, and I know it’s possible.
